PHOENIX (AP) - The Department of Veterans Affairs has appointed an interim director for the Phoenix VA Health Care System.

Beginning Monday, Steve Young will oversee delivery of health care to some 85,000 veterans and an operating budget of about $500 million.

Director Sharon Helman has been placed on administrative leave on May 1 amid investigations into extreme wait times and scheduling procedures that allegedly resulted in the deaths of at least 40 veterans.

Young has been the Director of the Salt Lake City VA Health Care System since June 2009.

He also served as the interim Medical Center at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago from February 2011 to June 2011.

Prior to that, Young served as the Deputy Network Director for the VA Sunshine Healthcare Network in Florida.
