ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - With the muddy season at hand, the state Department of Environmental Conservation is advising hikers to avoid higher elevation trails in the Adirondacks.
The agency says hikers should postpone hikes on trails above 3,000 feet until early June. Of particular concern are trails in the Dix, Giant and High Peaks Wilderness Areas in the northern Adirondacks.
Lower elevation trails dry out sooner and are less prone to erosion than the higher peaks. Officials ask that hikers use only the lower elevation trails during spring mud season.
DEC’s website (https://bit.ly/1fBUuuv ) provides information on current trail conditions in the Adirondacks. Hikers can also call DEC Forest Rangers for information at 518-897-1300.
