NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The New Orleans Fire Department says firefighters were among people who called in what became a four-alarm blaze at a large house divided into 12 apartments.
Firefighter Michael Williams says 11 residents were evacuated safely and the other two were away when the fire was reported about 5:30 a.m. Saturday.
Williams, the department spokesman, says two residents heard smoke detectors and banged at other apartment doors to get people out.
He says two firefighters returning from another call and two who were heading to work saw smoke and called in reports.
Williams says the two on their way to work helped evacuate the house.
He says the fire’s cause is still undetermined. Williams says the back wall, third floor and roof collapsed, and the right side was heavily damaged.
