COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) - The private Immanuel Christian School has changed its name to Columbus Christian Academy.
The Commercial Dispatch reported (https://bit.ly/1hy1GHn) the name change was formally announced in a meeting of students, faculty and parents this past week.
The school severed its affiliation with Immanuel Baptist Church in April.
As part of the separation agreement, the church asked the school to change its name.
Students nominated new names and the school’s board made the choice.
While the senior class will graduate from Immanuel Christian School, legal paperwork has already been filed to change the name, according to school board member Bill Thomas.
Thomas said the new name - Columbus Christian Academy - was an obvious choice for members of the board.
“It was the most popular vote between the parents and the kids and everybody,” Thomas said.
“It seemed like that was the name. We are in Columbus. We’re a Christian academy. Academy means higher education and that’s just what we’re about. That’s what we do,” he said.
