BOSTON (AP) - A U.S. Coast Guard rescue crew has transported an infant born prematurely from Martha’s Vineyard to Boston for specialized care.

The Coast Guard said on Saturday that Martha’s Vineyard Hospital requested help to transport the infant born by emergency cesarean section from Oaks Bluff to Tufts Medical Center in Boston shortly before midnight Friday.

Coast Guard crews from Cape Cod picked up a neonatal team and incubator at Boston Logan Airport and took them to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

One Coast Guard crewmember assisted the neonatal team in assessing and preparing the infant and her father for the trip to Boston.

Patrick Petrarca, the command duty officer at the Coast Guard 1st District Command Center, describes the operation as unique and says it feels great that their training helped the infant.
