CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin has appointed his communications director to West Virginia’s top tourism position.

Amy Shuler Goodwin will serve as the state’s deputy secretary of commerce and commissioner of tourism. She has worked as Tomblin’s communications director for the last two years.

Goodwin also served as top spokeswoman for West Virginia Gov. Bob Wise’s administration. During a 19-year career, Goodwin worked as state director for John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign and headed communications for the City of Charleston.

Goodwin is a former anchor and reporter for WTRF-TV in Wheeling and WCHS-TV in Charleston. She was also the managing member of a public relations firm.

Goodwin will replace current tourism official Betty Carver, who plans to retire May 31 after a 37-year career with the state.
