Sen. Rand Paul says he’s heading to North Carolina Monday to stump for Republican Greg Brannon, who is running well behind GOP establishment favorite Thom Tillis in the Republican U.S. Senate primary there.
“I have decided today I’m going Monday to campaign for Greg Brannon in North Carolina,” Mr. Paul, who endorsed Mr. Brannon in October, told Politico Wednesday. “I think it’s pretty close there actually, and there’s a chance we can help him enough to push him over the top.”
A new survey from the Democratic firm Public Policy Polling puts Mr. Tillis at 46 percent and Mr. Brannon at 20 percent, with a handful of other contenders at 11 percent or lower. Mr. Tillis must crack 40 percent in Tuesday’s election in order to avoid a July runoff.
Mr. Tillis, Speaker of the North Carolina state House, has lined up a deep well of support from top Republicans, including Gov. Pat McCrory.
The winner will face off against incumbent Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan, whose first campaign ad directly targeted Mr. Tillis. Senate Majority PAC, a third-party group founded by former aides to Majority Leader Harry Reid, has also attacked Mr. Tillis.
