WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Purdue University’s most recent Nobel laureate has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences.

Chemistry professor Ei-Ichi Negishi (ay-EE’-cheh neh-GEE’-shee) was recently elected to the academy as a foreign associate in recognition of his distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. He’ll be inducted into the academy at its next annual meeting.

Election into the National Academy is one of the highest honors a scientist or engineer in the United States can receive. Some of the academy’s most renowned members include Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison and Orville Wright.

Negishi shared the 2010 Nobel Prize for chemistry with two other researchers for finding new ways to bond carbon atoms together. That process is widely used to make medicines.

Negishi is currently the director of Purdue’s Negishi-Brown Institute.
