NEW YORK (AP) - New York City’s police commissioner says he has concerns about whether a proposed municipal identification card would be secure against abuse.
The Wall Street Journal (https://on.wsj.com/1jkMXDw ) says Commissioner Bill Bratton said he supports the idea of the card and is primarily worried about its implementation.
He says “as in all things, the devil is going to be in the details.”
A City Council committee held a hearing Wednesday on the proposed government-issued identification. It was the first legislative step in the city’s drive to introduce the card, which the mayor supports.
Backers say it would help the city’s illegal immigrants gain access to city services.
City officials hope to have the program in place by year’s end.
Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito says the program would be designed to deter fraud.
