BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - The North Dakota Highway Patrol says a woman walking along a highway was struck and killed by a semitrailer near Alexander, in western North Dakota.

Troopers say 67-year-old Linda Southerland of Foster, Oregon, was standing in the southbound lane of U.S. Highway 85 when she was struck by the truck at about 1:10 a.m. Thursday morning.

The driver of the semi told troopers that he attempted to swerve to avoid hitting the woman.

The patrol says Southerland’s body has been sent to Bismarck for autopsy.
