DETROIT (AP) - A new 5th Precinct building is planned for Detroit’s east side - eight years after the former police station house for that area closed.

Mayor Mike Duggan and Chief James Craig participated Thursday in a groundbreaking ceremony at the site for the new precinct.

Construction will start in June. The building is expected to open in December. Craig said funding for the project is part of the city’s bankruptcy restructuring plan.

The old building closed in 2005 and the 5th Precinct was combined with Detroit’s 9th Precinct to make up the city’s Eastern District.

The city is shifting back to precincts from districts, in part, to enhance community policing efforts.

Riverbend Community Association president Jay Henderson said Thursday that “it’s always good” to have a police presence in his neighborhood.
