NEW YORK (AP) - Several thousand workers from various unions marked May Day with a rally near New York City Hall and a twilight march to Wall Street.
The events Thursday were part of a worldwide celebration of the labor movement and a push for better working conditions, higher wages and immigration reform.
It’s the fifth year workers have rallied at City Hall on May 1.
Speakers ranged from union and political leaders, including the city council speaker and the city comptroller, to the grandson of folk singer and activist Pete Seeger.
Leaders of the city’s public sector unions urged city leaders to continue settling more than 100 outstanding contracts.
The city Thursday announced it had reached a new contract with teachers and other public school employees. The previous agreement expired in October 2009.
