NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Samba, bossa nova and Brazilian rock and rap are among the musical genres on tap at this year’s New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, which is presenting a mini-festival celebrating Brazil’s culture and the similarities to its host city.
Not only known for its promotion of New Orleans’ musical heritage, the festival’s cultural exchange pavilion pays tribute to countries that have contributed to New Orleans’ culture. Last year, the festival celebrated American Indians and their heritage.
Festival producer Quint Davis says partnering with the State of Bahia and Brazil’s government to spotlight Brazil this year was a natural since Brazil also relishes Carnival, street parades and good food.
The festival’s second weekend opened Thursday with a lineup including The String Cheese Incident, Lyle Lovett and The Wailers.
