ATLANTA (AP) - The U.S. Department of Education says it’s reviewing the way Emory University responds to complaints of sexual violence and harassment.

The Department’s Office for Civil Rights on Thursday named Emory as one of 55 colleges nationwide being probed for Title IX compliance and enforcement.

In a statement, Emory University officials said the department is reviewing the school’s sexual assault prevention, outreach, support and education programs.

Emory spokeswoman Beverly Cox Clark says the school works to build a safe community and takes all complaints and accusations of sexual misconduct seriously. Clarks says the federal review isn’t linked to any specific case or complaint.

The Department of Education’s Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Catherine Lhamon says officials hope publishing the list of schools under investigation will prompt community discussions on the issue.
