SANDY RUN, S.C. (AP) - Transportation officials say the eastbound rest area on Interstate 26 just south of Columbia is closing as crews continue to widen the highway to three lanes in each direction.
The S.C. Department of Transportation said workers will close the rest area at mile marker 123 early Thursday. A nearby rest area serving the westbound lanes was closed in January.
The rest areas will remain closed while DOT works to widen the 9 miles of I-26 from Interstate 77 to Exit 125. The project will also improve 11 more miles of I-26 heading east.
The project includes replacing two bridges that carry I-26 over a railroad track near the I-77 interchange.
