CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (AP) - A Central Falls High School senior believed to be the first from the school to get into Harvard University is accepting the Ivy League school’s admissions offer.

School officials said Thursday that Jean Paul Valencia will become a member of Harvard’s class of 2018. They think this is the first time one of their students has been accepted to Harvard.

Valencia also got in to Brown, Yale, Dartmouth and Columbia. He is vice president of his class and valedictorian.

Central Falls High has been among Rhode Island’s lowest performing schools in recent years but is undergoing an overhaul. The city in 2011 became the first in Rhode Island to declare municipal bankruptcy.

A deputy superintendent says the school is proud of Valencia’s decision and wishes him well.
