CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - The state Department of Education has named three Schools of Excellence in West Virginia.

Those named for the 2014-15 school year were selected on several factors. They include curriculum, a safe and drug-free learning environment, documented student achievement and implementing advanced and innovative programs.

The winning schools announced Thursday are George Washington Elementary School in Putnam County, Brandywine Elementary School in Pendleton County and Maxwell Hill Elementary in Raleigh County.

A reception and banquet to recognize the schools is set for Oct. 9 at the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences in Charleston.

The number of honorees is down from 10 schools that were named in each of the past two years.
