WASHINGTON (AP) - Two schools in the mid-Atlantic region are among the 55 colleges and universities that are being investigated over their handling of sexual abuse complaints under Title IX.

The Catholic University of America in Washington and Frostburg State University in western Maryland are on the list of universities released Thursday by the Education Department. The disclosure of the schools under investigation comes as the Obama administration tries to bring more transparency to the handling of sexual assault on campuses.

A Frostburg State spokeswoman says the investigation stems from an off-campus sexual assault that occurred last year. A statement from Catholic says the probe centers on the investigation and adjudication of a reported assault in December 2012. Both universities say they are cooperating fully with investigators.
