STUTTGART, Germany (AP) - Stuttgart fired Thomas Schneider and appointed former Schalke coach Huub Stevens in his place on Sunday.
Schneider, who replaced the sacked Bruno Labbadia last August, was being released “with immediate effect” along with assistant coaches Alfons Higl and Tomislav Maric, the Bundesliga club said on its website.
Saturday’s 2-2 draw at home with bottom side Eintracht Braunschweig was not enough to save Schneider after a run of eight successive Bundesliga defeats.
“The board took this decision together with Thomas Schneider,” said Stuttgart President Bernd Wahler, who suggested the 41-year-old would still play a future role within the club. “The current sporting situation forced those with responsibility at the club to take this difficult step.”
Dutchman Stevens takes over on Monday, charged with steering Stuttgart away from the relegation zone. The 2007 Bundesliga champion is level on points with Hamburger SV in the relegation playoff place with ten games remaining in the season.
Stevens was fired by Greek side PAOK last week after a series of poor results.
The 60-year-old coach previously had two spells in charge at Schalke, where he was named “coach of the century” after winning the UEFA Cup in 1997 and German Cup wins in 2001 and 2002. Stevens also coached Hertha Berlin, Cologne and Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga.
