STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) - The Oklahoma State University/A&M Board of Regents has voted to award an honorary doctorate to OSU graduate Tererai Trent.

The honorary degree must also be approved by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and is to be awarded to Trent in May when she speaks at OSU’s undergraduate ceremonies.

Trent educated herself while growing up in poverty in Africa before earning a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education from OSU in 2001 and a master’s degree from OSU in 2003. She later earned a doctor in 2009 from Western Michigan University.

Trent attracted attention when television host Oprah Winfrey announced in 2011 that she donated $1.5 million to help Trent build a school for children in Trent’s hometown of Zimbabwe, Africa.
