ALAPAHA, Ga. (AP) - The Federal Bureau of Investigation and local police and sheriff’s deputies are searching for suspects in the armed robbery of a south Georgia bank.
The FBI said two gunmen dressed in black “battle dress/military-type” uniforms entered the Bank of Alapaha in Berrien County and announced a robbery around 10 a.m. Friday.
Authorities say the men forced bank employees to lay face-down on the floor.
“One of the robbers vaulted the teller counter with a handgun and an improvised explosive device (I.E.D.) that was later determined to be an inert hoax device,” the FBI said in a statement.
No serious injuries were reported, and the suspects left the bank with an undisclosed amount of money.
A badly burned white four-door sedan believed to be the getaway vehicle was found several miles away. Investigators believe the suspects torched the sedan, then used two other vehicles to escape the area. Those vehicles were described as an older model, green Ford Explorer and a burgundy Cadillac Escalade-type SUV.
Authorities say they have a security camera image of a man at a nearby gas station, Jernigan’s Farm Service and Supply, who they say is a person of interest in the investigation.
Alapaha is about 60 miles southeast of Albany.
