CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Attorney General Patrick Morrisey is warning West Virginia residents about a text message scam.

Here’s how it works: Consumers receive a text message saying they’ve won a prize. The message directs the consumer to a website with directions to enter a code.

But consumers who follow those instructions are only signing up for multiple trial offers to supposedly qualify for prizes. In some cases, they are hit with monthly recurring charges.

Morrisey says scammers appear to be targeting numbers at random, probably using computer programs that send bulk messages using just a few simple keystrokes. He says anyone receiving such messages should delete them immediately without clicking on any links.
