NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - The Newport Historical Society has received a grant from Brown University to document the Ivy League institution’s founding ahead of its 250th anniversary next year.
The group says the university has given it a $10,000 grant to create an exhibit, walking tour and other materials that will focus on Brown’s founding and its historical ties to Newport.
Brown was founded in 1765 in Warren, and many of the people involved in its establishment lived or worked in Newport, then the state’s largest city.
The school moved to Providence in 1770 and has been there ever since.
The Newport Historical Society says it has several documents related to the university’s founding in its collections.
Brown is kicking off its 15-month-long 250th anniversary celebration on Friday.
