PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A Maine official says prisons are safer than they were three years ago despite last week’s slaying of an inmate at the Maine State Prison.
WMTW-TV (https://bit.ly/P9zHGI ) reports that Maine Department of Corrections Commissioner Joseph Ponte says little could be done to prevent the murder of Micah Boland. Boland died after he was stabbed 87 times by another inmate last Friday. No one saw the incident.
Ponte says prisons have become safer overall and that staff cannot oversee everything. He says hiring more prison staff would not prevent similar incidents.
Another inmate, 35-year-old Richard Stahursky, was charged with murder Tuesday. Police say he “hog-tied” Boland and killed him after Stahursky lost his job as a prison hallway worker.
