When he was campaigning for the presidency in October 2008, then-Sen. Barack Obama told his supporters how to fight against their Republican opponents: “If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun.”

He was most likely alluding to a speech made by Sean Connery’s character in the movie “The Untouchables,” who said: “Here’s how you get him. He pulls a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. That’s the Chicago way.”

President Obama’s pusillanimous unwillingness to bring the full weight of diplomatic and economic sanctions to bear to punish Syrian President Bashar Assad’s atrocities in Syria, Iran’s ongoing development of a nuclear weapon and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, however, show no evidence of his willingness to confront anything, let alone bring greater resources to bear.

It seems clear that fighting “the Chicago way” is to be deployed only against Mr. Obama’s domestic political opponents, on whom he freely unleashes the power of the IRS, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Justice Department.
