GRANDVILLE, Mich. (AP) - The co-captain of Grandville High School’s hockey team has died of an enlarged heart.

School officials say 17-year-old Ryan Fischer was found unresponsive at home Friday morning. Superintendent Ron Caniff tells The Grand Rapids Press (https://bit.ly/P9YL0p ) that Fischer had gone to bed with no unusual symptoms the night before.

His team was scheduled to play in the Division I state tournament semifinals Friday night against Detroit Catholic Central. His family and school officials decided to proceed with the game.

He assisted in a game-winning overtime goal Wednesday as Grandville defeated Grand Rapids West Catholic 3-2.

Fischer was also a standout football and baseball player, won academic all-conference honors and served on the student government executive board. He had planned to enroll at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
