BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Benton Harbor’s emergency manager announced the city’s financial emergency has been resolved in a letter to Gov. Rick Snyder.
Emergency Manger Tony Saunders said Friday the southwestern Michigan city has a healthy fund balance and made all annual pension payments for the first time in a decade.
He recommended Snyder appoint a transitional board to help ensure “the city will have a smoother ride.”
Snyder spokeswoman Sara Wurfel says the governor will review the letter this weekend and expects to act soon.
Saunders has been the emergency manager since February 2013, when the city had a $2.7 million deficit. He reduced general fund spending by about 30 percent and health care by 75 percent.
Emergency managers also oversee the finances of Detroit, Allen Park, Flint, Hamtramck and several school districts.
