OBAMA URGES STUDENTS TO FILE FINANCIAL AID FORM, HEADS FOR FAMILY VACATION IN FLORIDA KEYS
President Barack Obama says education is the best investment in America’s future, and he’s urging high school students to make sure they file for federal financial aid. Obama traveled to a model Miami high school to announce that, beginning in the fall, the federal Education Department can begin working with states to identify students who have not filed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA.
MOM WHO DROVE KIDS INTO OCEAN FACES CHARGES
A pregnant South Carolina woman who drove a minivan carrying her three young children into the ocean surf off Florida was charged Friday with attempted murder and child abuse, with authorities saying the children were screaming to bystanders that she was trying to kill them. Bystanders and officers helped rescue 32-year-old Ebony Wilkerson and her children, ages 3, 9 and 10, from their minivan as it was almost submerged on Tuesday on Daytona Beach.
FAMILY HOSPITALIZED AFTER EATING MEAT WITH LSD
Authorities say a Tampa Bay area family was hospitalized after eating meat tainted with LSD. Tampa police say the family of four ate the tainted meat and became ill Monday. The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office reported Friday that the meat had been contaminated with the hallucinogenic drug. Local police, along with county health officials and state and federal agriculture officials, are investigating how the drug got into the meat.
JACKSONVILLE ZOO OPENS NEW TIGER EXHIBIT
A new, $9.5 million tiger exhibit is set to open Saturday at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. The Land of the Tiger exhibit will feature five tigers - a pair of rare Sumatran tigers and three Malayan tiger brothers from the Palm Beach Zoo. The 2.5-acre exhibit is the second phase of the zoo’s Asia Precinct expansion, which began in 2009 with the Asian Bamboo gardens and the Komodo Dragon Exhibit.
WOMAN HIT BY TROOPER DIES
A 97-year-old woman who was hit by a Florida Highway Patrol car has died in a Daytona Beach hospital. Officials say Maria McEwen was walking toward a store Wednesday when the trooper’s car hit her. She suffered leg injuries and died on Thursday.
