NEW YORK (AP) - The widow of a retired Long Island Rail Road train engineer who died in September says she must repay nearly $27,000 in extra pension benefits due to a “processing error” by the MTA.
Shirley Findel tells Newsday (https://bit.ly/NzNPrK ) she’s angry about having to repay for a mistake the MTA failed to discover for almost 20 years.
The 79-year-old says the agency informed her last week that she could repay the money over nine years.
The MTA says it has a duty to recover funds that were improperly paid to a beneficiary even if it was the result of an inadvertent error.
Findel says she was told the error was uncovered after Findel notified pension administrators her husband had died last fall.
She now lives in Port Richey, Fla.
