BLOOMFIELD, Mo. (AP) - A monument honoring U.S. Navy Seabee veterans will be unveiled this weekend in Bloomfield.
The Seabees were members of the Navy’s construction battalion, which built bases, airstrips and roads during combat. The Dexter Daily Statesman reports (https://bit.ly/1fKSX2f ) The Navy Seabee Veterans of America is working to put a Seabee monument in every veterans cemetery in the nation.
A monument will be unveiled Saturday at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield.
Thomas M. Meyer, a Navy Seabee veteran from 1969 to 1972, said the monument will be the first at a state veterans cemetery in Missouri. A similar monument is in place at Missouri’s Jefferson Barracks, which is a national cemetery.
The number of Seabee veterans has dropped from 325,000 during World War II to fewer than 5,000 in 2014.
