MIAMI (AP) - The new chief of the FBI office in Miami once interrogated Saddam Hussein after the Iraqi leader’s 2003 capture during the U.S.-led war that toppled his regime.

George Piro has taken over the 400-agent office that conducts investigations from Fort Pierce to Key West along Florida’s southeast coast. Piro is a fluent Arabic speaker who most recently was assigned to an FBI weapons of mass destruction office at headquarters in Washington.

The Miami Herald (https://hrld.us/1id0TkP ) reports that Piro was chosen to interrogate Saddam in part because of his Arabic language skills. Piro has also held several top FBI counterterrorism positions.

Piro served in the Air Force and was a police officer in Ceres, Calif., before joining the FBI. He also has a master’s degree from Georgetown University in security studies.
