CLEVELAND (AP) - The mayor of Cleveland is giving his police department a grade of “B’’ and says he welcomes a federal investigation into alleged use of excessive force.

Mayor Frank Jackson says he is not interested in covering up departmental faults or promoting its image and hopes the Justice Department investigation yields the truth.

The Northeast Ohio Media Group reports that Jackson noted in remarks Wednesday that deadly force incidents in Cleveland have dropped from 37 shootings in 2006 to 14 last year.

Jackson made the comments in an interview with a WKYC-TV anchor at the City Club of Cleveland in an approach he has substituted for a traditional state of the city speech two years running.

Jackson also says more will be done to address Cleveland’s pothole epidemic.
