GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) - Leflore County is beginning the installation of eight new warning sirens.

The Greenwood Commonwealth reports (https://bit.ly/1jRdKXg ) that original grant paperwork listed incorrect locations for eight of the 11 sirens - in flood plains, on private property or under power lines - and approval from the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, which is covering the cost of the sirens, was needed before hooking them up in a new location.

On Monday, County Administrator Sam Abraham says he’s received approval from MEMA.

The sirens were paid for with a grant of $250,000 from MEMA.

The board of supervisors also is working on a $20,000 federal grant to place storm shelters in three locations around the county. The grant requires an approximately $7,000 local match.
