ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - A western New York man has been sentenced to 32 years to life in prison for a shooting that prosecutors say took place over an ounce of marijuana.

The Monroe County District Attorney’s office says 21-year-old Michael Williams received the maximum sentence Tuesday for killing Alexander Marquez and wounding Christian Ramos in a Rochester park in 2012.

Williams was convicted of second-degree murder, assault and weapons possession after a jury trial in November. Authorities say he and a 15-year-old went to the park to buy marijuana and tried to rob the victims at gunpoint. Marquez was shot twice in the back. Ramos survived being shot in the leg and shoulder.

Prosecutor Julie Hahn calls the shooting “a senseless act over an ounce of weed.”

The 15-year-old pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
