WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. (AP) - Residents on the Navajo Nation who qualify for phone services subsidized by the federal government now have another option in service providers.
The Federal Communications Commission recently designated Navajo Tribal Utility Authority Wireless, LLC as an eligible telecommunications carrier.
Brian Tagaban is the executive director of the Navajo Nation Telecommunications Regulatory Commission. He says the reservation has a substantial population of low-income residents who lack phone service. He says they now can choose between at least two companies in applying for the Lifeline program.
The Lifeline program was created to ensure that all Americans have access to a basic telephone line. It’s supported by a surcharge on telephone customer bills.
The designation by the FCC also allows NTUA Wireless, LLC to apply for funding to build out infrastructure.
