WASHINGTON (AP) - Former District of Columbia mayor and current councilmember Marion Barry is pledging to finish his term following two lengthy hospitalizations.
Barry told reporters upon his release from a rehabilitation facility Wednesday that his health problems were serious, but “not as serious as people made it out.”
Barry has fought two infections and other complications from diabetes this year. Following his second hospitalization, he was admitted into the Medstar National Rehabilitation Network in an effort to regain his mobility.
Barry represents Ward 8, the city’s poorest ward, on the D.C. Council. He was elected to a third consecutive term in 2012. He says he’ll return to work but he hasn’t set a date.
In addition to diabetes, Barry has survived prostate cancer and kidney failure that required a transplant in 2009.
