MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - A suburban New York legislator says he is seeking the Democratic nomination to replace retiring Rep. Carolyn McCarthy.

Kevan (kehv-AHN’) Abrahams of Freeport announced Wednesday he will challenge Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice. The primary will be held June 24.

Nassau’s Democratic leader, Jay Jacobs, says he will remain neutral.

McCarthy announced earlier this year she will not seek a 10th term in the House. She has endorsed Rice.

Two Republicans, Bruce Blakeman and Frank Scaturro, also have announced they are running.

The 4th Congressional District encompasses southwestern Nassau County.

Abrahams was first elected to the county legislature in 2002 and has led the body since 2012.

If elected, Abrahams would be the first black member of Congress from a district entirely on Long Island.
