LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is urging the Michigan House to “hang firm” and not accept Senate changes to legislation to restrict sales of stolen scrap metal.
He spoke about the bill and other issues behind closed doors Wednesday with House Republicans and Democrats in the Capitol.
Duggan tells reporters the Senate removed protections that would help law enforcement “crack down on unsavory scrap metal dealers.”
One dispute is over the House’s requirement that people wait three days for payment after selling copper wire, catalytic converters and air conditioners. The Senate prefers waiving the waiting period if the industry creates a real-time database of scrap purchases.
Duggan and Gov. Rick Snyder have called for lawmakers to pass tighter scrap metal restrictions this year.
