WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) - A 17-year-old Waterbury boy has been charged with killing his mother after an argument over the use of her car.

Elijah Jonson was arrested on a murder charge Sunday after police said DNA evidence matched him to evidence taken from under the fingernails of 44-year-old Kacy Austin in January.

Johnson, who is charged as an adult, was ordered held Monday in lieu of $1 million bond. The boy’s attorney, Mark Lee, declined to comment Tuesday.

The Republican-American (https://bit.ly/1gP0hfE ) reports that a psychiatrist who had spoken with boy’s father told police the teen had confessed. The psychiatrist said the boy told his father the death was accidental, and that it occurred while the two were fighting after she denied him use of the car.

Family and friends told police that Austin did not allow her son to take her car without an adult present because he had only a learner’s permit.

Johnson’s father told the psychiatrist that the boy admitted pushing his mother while arguing about that policy, and that she fell over some furniture, according to the newspaper. The doctor told police he believed he was obligated to report the conversation.

Police said the boy drove the car to Sacred Heart High School on the morning of Jan. 21. He reported finding his mother dead and his room ransacked after arriving back at home following a weather-related early dismissal.

Police said they did not find evidence the home had been burglarized.

An autopsy found that Austin had been strangled and had several small stab wounds on her face. Police recovered one knife blade in a toilet and another on a bed in the woman’s room.
