The Nationals announced the signing of left-handed reliever Mike Gonzalez to minor league deal, including an invitation to major league spring training.
Gonzalez, 35, returns to the Nationals after spending parts of the 2012 season with the club.
With the team expected to keep seven arms out of the bullpen, Gonzalez will look to add depth and compete with Jerry Blevins as the team’s go-to left-hander.
Gonzalez appeared in 47 games for the Nationals in 2012, registering a 3.03 earned run average in just over 35 innings of work.
The 11-year veteran has spent time with six different teams in his major league career since making his debut in 2003 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Gonzalez holds a career ERA of 3.14 and has 56 saves in 509 career games.
Gonzalez pitched for Milwaukee last season, and struggled to the tune of an 0-3 record with a 4.68 ERA in 50 innings pitched.
