EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - President Barack Obama has proposed spending $90 million in the coming budget year to keep a $730 million physics research project on track at Michigan State University.
A groundbreaking is expected this month at the East Lansing school for the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams. The research facility known as FRIB (EF’-rib) is expected to open sometime between 2020 and 2022.
Michigan Democratic U.S. Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow say the Obama’s decision to put the funding in his fiscal 2015 budget proposal Tuesday will boost the university and the pursuit of knowledge. Michigan State won a national competition to host the project in 2008.
Preparation work is underway on the project, which backers have estimated will create 5,000 construction jobs and 400 permanent jobs.
