The New York Times has pulled an article from its archives that was written more than a century ago and issued a correction that makes clear the spelling of a man’s name.
A Jan. 20, 1863, article spelled the name of a black man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery, Solomon Northup, two different ways: Northrop and Northup, CNN said.
The error came to light because of the best picture Oscar awarded the film, “12 Years a Slave,” which told the story of Mr. Northup.
A Twitter user who was curious about the story in the film dug up the old New York Times article, CNN reported.
“The errors came to light on Monday after a Twitter user pointed out the article in The Times archives,” the correction read, CNN reported.
