COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A Georgia man accused of stealing a South Carolina physician’s identity and pretending to be a doctor is expected to plead guilty to a federal charge.
Court documents show Ernest Addo of Austell, Ga., is scheduled to appear in federal court Tuesday. In December, he signed an agreement to plead guilty to using someone else’s identity to commit health care fraud.
Addo was arrested in 2012 and charged with practicing medicine without a license and unlawfully distributing controlled substances. Authorities said he stole the identity of a friend who was a doctor in Orangeburg, then treated hundreds of patients in the Columbia area.
Addo still faces a number of state charges and could be sentenced to as much as two years in prison on the federal charge.
