MONACO (AP) - Monaco defender Eric Abidal is set to resume training on Wednesday after being hospitalized with a viral infection as precautionary measure.

Monaco said in a statement on Tuesday that Abidal has been staying at the Princesse Grace hospital since Sunday. The 34-year-old Abidal was taken there “given his medical history and out of precaution” with respect to a serious illness that threatened to end his career.

Abidal had a liver transplant in April, 2012, ruling him out of that year’s European Championship and keeping him away from football for one year. He returned to make a few appearances for Barcelona at the tail end of the 2012-13 season before leaving to join Monaco.

Monaco says he is due to be released on Wednesday and is fit enough to resume training.
