PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Some 300 users of the state labor department’s online career center have been targeted in an apparent scam by someone who fraudulently used an employer’s identification information to impersonate a business.

The state Department of Labor and Training said it learned Monday that someone impersonating a business had contacted about 300 users of EmployRI.org to ask them to up Yahoo instant messenger accounts and provide personal data.

DLT says anyone who responded may have compromised the security of their personal information and computer. Anyone who provided information is urged to report a possible security breach to one of the credit reporting agencies. The department will provide up to a year of credit monitoring.

The department is contacting all the affected individuals.

It has also contacted state police.
