SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - South African Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool will speak about Nelson Mandel’s impact on peacemaking when he delivers the annual Rev. Theodore Hesburgh Lecture in Ethics and Public Policy at the University of Notre Dame.
Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies Director Scott Appleby says Mandela was a mentor and friend to Rasool. Appleby describes Rasool as a courageous leader in the anti-apartheid struggle, saying he also was imprisoned and placed under house arrest by the government.
Before being appointed as ambassador to the United States, Rasool was a member of parliament in the National Assembly, special adviser to the state president of the Republic of South Africa, and premier of the Western Cape Province.
He is scheduled to speak at Notre Dame on April 8.
