RENO, Nev. (AP) - A man killed in a Reno garage fire was identified Monday as the son of a Reno-Sparks NAACP official and brother of the local organization’s former president.
Ronald Feemster, 58, died Friday, a day after he and two others were injured in the blaze at a northwest Reno home, his family said. He was working on his van in what authorities believe was a closed garage when the fire broke out Thursday night.
Feemster was flown to the University of California, Davis burn unit. His family traveled there to see him before he was taken off life support, his brother Lonnie Feemster told the Reno Gazette-Journal (https://on.rgj.com/1mFF7ak).
The Feemsters’ mother, Dolores, is assistant secretary of the Reno-Sparks chapter of the NAACP, the nation’s oldest civil rights group. The chapter’s website describes her as a local matriarch.
Lonnie Feemster was the chapter’s president from 1999 to 2002 and from 2009 to 2012. Another brother, Darryl Feemster, is a member of the organization’s executive committee.
Luke Mumui, 28, also was burned in the fire and taken to the California burn unit, where he remained in critical condition. Mumui is married to Delores Feemster’s granddaughter.
A third victim, Priscilla Endemann, 36, suffered smoke inhalation and was reported in stable condition Monday. Endemann is Mumui’s sister-in-law, according to the NAACP website.
