CHICAGO (AP) - Cook County loaned nearly 3 percent of its salt supply to nearby communities this winter after near-record amounts of snow fell across some portions of the state.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports (https://bit.ly/1ohB2e8 ) Cook County loaned nearly 1,340 tons of salt to communities. About 22 percent of that - roughly 300 tons - went to Blue Island. Another 200 tons went to Lemont and Lake County.
Frank Shuftan is a spokesman for Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle.
He says Cook County used 32,700 tons of salt this winter. It still has another 11,000 tons on hand for next season.
The communities that borrowed salt will have to replace it when they refill their supplies ahead of next winter.
More than 80 inches of snow fell in Chicago this winter.
