Boston Public Library administrators are marking the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on marathon runners with a display of thousands of items from victims and concerned citizens, including some of the bibs and shoes worn during the April 15, 2013, race.
The items came from the original memorial that was set up near the finish line of the Boston Marathon to honor the three killed and 260-plus injured, The Associated Press reported.
The collection will also include medals and other “Boston Strong” memorabilia that was planted at the scene of the attack: teddy bears, signs that were displayed giving heartfelt well-wishes and personal messages to victims, and 150 pairs of running shoes that were first placed at the makeshift memorial in Copley Square, shortly after the bombing, AP reported.
The exhibit, set for April 7 to May 11, is called “Dear Boston: Messages from the Marathon Memorial.”
In addition to the makeshift memorial that was established by the finish line of the marathon, a cross was also erected for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer who was shot and killed three days later, AP said.
