ST. LOUIS (AP) - James Stewart raced to his fifth AMA Supercross victory of the season and 50th overall, pulling away in front of a record 60,213 fans Saturday night at the Edward Jones Dome.
Stewart, the Yoshimura Suzuki rider from Haines City, Fla., is second on the career 4500SX Class victory list, 22 behind Jeremy McGrath.
“This is a special night for me,” Stewart said. “This year I have been having a lot of fun winning races. Tonight was a great race for me. I was able to make the pass and ride to my 50th win. That is huge for me. I never thought I would win 50 of these races.”
Stewart took the lead on the 10th of 20 laps, passing three-time defending series champion Ryan Villopoto in the corner before the finish line.
Villopoto finished second. He leads the season standings, 35 points ahead of Ryan Dungey and 36 in front of third-place Stewart.
“It’s all about the big picture and the championship for me,” Villopoto said. “I can’t afford to make any big mistakes. I was able to get a good start and put in some good laps early on.”
Justin Barcia was third. Dungey ended up ninth after crashing on the last lap.
Kawasaki’s Martin Davalos won the Eastern Regional 250SX Class race to extend his season points lead to eight. He has two victories this season.
“This was a tough race tonight,” said Davalos, from Ecuador. “Again, the start was key, and I was able to get the early lead and hold on. I want to enjoy this win and go back and keep working hard.”
Justin Bogle was second.
“I made some passes and moved into second place but then made a few mistakes,” Bogle said.
